The first Sacketts to appear in the colonial records of America are Simon Sackett of Newtown of the Massachusetts Bay Colony from about 1630 to his death in 1635 and John Sackett of the New Haven Colony of Connecticut from 1641 to his death in 1684. As the descendants of the two men spread out prior to 1800; some who descended from each man were found living in some of the same localities. This mixing of the two lines has increased the difficulty of sorting and tracing the descendants of each man.
In 1907, when Charles Weygant published "The Sacketts of America," it was the common belief that virtually all of the Sacketts in America descended from two brothers, John and Simon Sackett, who migrated to America from Isle of Ely in 1630. However, recent research has cast serious doubt upon the brother relationship between Simon Sackett who is found in the records of Newtown (Cambridge), MA and John Sackett who appears in the records of the New Haven Colony, CT. Recent research has also shown that Simon Sackett migrated from the Isle of Thanet, Kent County, Englend.
In 1999 the members of the SACKETT-L@rootsweb.com initiated a project to update and correct the information found in Weygant's 1907 book and to add information for the lines which "daughtered out." This database is part of the update project and deals primarily with the Sacketts in America.
In September, 2003 some of the members of the SACKETT-L organized The Sackett Family Association (TSFA). TSFA has a website at: www.sackettfamily.info .
Our story is far from complete. If you can add to the story or correct our mistakes or just have questions or comments about what you see, please feel free to contact us. We look forward to hearing from you.
