  • Notes
    • Charlotta NILSDOTTER (or NILSSON) was born on October 1, 1858 in the town of Ransäter in Värmland in Sweden to Nils PERSSON and Maria HÅKANSDOTTER. Swedish records usually record her name as NILSDOTTER; however, she was listed as NILSSON on the Swedish emigration record. In the United States her surname was seen in various records in Massachusetts as NEILSON, NEISDOFFER (NILSDOTTER?), and NELSON. In her later years she always spoke of it in the anglicized form NELSON. When she first got to Worcester, she used the forename Charlotta, but gradually she seems to have anglicized it to Charlotte.

I have no information on her baptism. In the United States, she was a devout follower of the Swedish Methodist Episcopal Church.

In October 1880 she emigrated from Sweden to Worcester, Massachusetts, where either by chance or, more likely, by prior arrangement she met and was married to John KORP in Worcester in December 1880 by the Rev. Albert Ericson. She emigrated from the town of Munkfors on the Klarälven river in Värmland via Christiana, Norway to the United States on the ship the S.S. Angola.

She and John lived and raised a family in Worcester until about 1896 when they moved to McKeesport, Pennsylvania which has been the KORP family's home ground since.

John KORP died in about 1908 leaving Charlotte with eight children from ages 8 to 26. Although some of the older girls were working, she probably found it necessary or desireable to remarry. About 1909 or 1910 she married a newly widowed Axel LANDSTROM who also worked in the steel mills in McKeesport, and who himself had four children, including a five year old boy.

Charlotte raised not only her own children but Axel's children. Axel died about 1925. Charlotte continued to live in McKeesport until her death at her home at 1808 Fremont St. in 1938 in her 80th year. She is also buried at Versailles cemetery in McKeesport.

Charlotte has been described to me as a beautiful woman, not tall, and maybe a little plump. She kept her hair very long and wore it in a braid on the top of her head. She had a number of fancy combs which she wore in her hair.
